Labour’s Plan to Overhaul the Planning System

A new day and a new Government! With Angela Rayner taking over the reins form Michael Gove as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities alongside her role as Deputy Prime Minister, Planning is clearly high on the Governments agenda, but what will this mean in practice?

🎯 A return to the 300,000 homes a year target with Labour committing to build 1.5 million homes over the course of the next Parliament enforced through an immediate update to the NPPF.

🌲 The strategic release of “Grey Belt” land from the Green Belt for development under specific conditions (which are yet to be confirmed).

🏠 The development of new towns within which 40-50% of homes will be required to be affordable.

📝 “Tough action” will be taken on Local Authorities to ensure Local Plans are kept up to date, although we await details on how this will be achieved.

Labour’s manifesto sets out ambitious targets and whilst we await further details on how these will be implemented in practice, it is refreshing to hear Planning namechecked by the Chancellor this morning and an appropriately senior member of cabinet be appointed Secretary of State for Levelling Up, housing and Communities.
